Attribute draft guide

The draft is where your career in The GOAT is truly decided. It runs eight rounds, one per attribute, drawing legends from a deck of 200 names across every era, from the 1950s to today. This guide explains the mechanics behind each steal and the strategies that separate an average build from a GOAT candidate. New to the game? Start with the how to play guide.

How stealing works

Each round the game draws a legend and shows their eight attributes. You steal one, and that value becomes yours in that attribute. The detail that changes everything: every steal charges a malus, a penalty that lands on the drawn legend's own weakest spot (excluding the attribute you stole).

The malus scales with the value you take: modest steals cost 1 point, elite steals cost up to 5. In numbers: stealing a 77 costs 1; stealing a 95 or higher costs 4 to 5.

One more important rule: if the malus lands on an attribute you haven't stolen yet, it stays pending and is only charged if you fill that attribute later. A malus never drops an attribute below 40.

The extra draws

You get 2 extra draws per career: if the current legend doesn't fit your project, discard and draw another. Don't hoard both for the end. The round where a legend shows up whose best attribute you've already filled is exactly when to spend one.

Archetypes: the game reads your build

At the end of the draft, the game classifies your build into one of five archetypes, and that shifts your season numbers:

No archetype is better than the others; what matters is that the build is coherent. A center with high 3PT and low rebounding wastes both. What each attribute actually feeds is in the attributes guide.

Strategies that work

Choose your weaknesses on purpose

Every build carries maluses, and the question is where they land. Before drafting, decide on two attributes your build won't use (a pure scorer can live with low Rebounding and Defense) and gladly accept the maluses that fall there. A malus that lands on one of those barely costs you anything.

Don't underrate Physical

High Physical slows your career decline: your peak runs from 26 to 29, and after that every season charges a toll, smaller for players with a strong body. In a race for career totals (the "LeBron path" to GOAT requires 38,000 points), longevity is worth as much as peak. See how it's weighted in the verdict guide.

Clutch decides titles

Clutch feeds your scoring, drives the decision moments in key games, and raises your title probability in the playoffs. Builds that ignore Clutch put up pretty stats and lose finals.

Steal high even when it's expensive

The maximum malus is 5; the gap between stealing an 80 jumper and a 97 jumper is far bigger than that. Choosing between a "cheap" average value and an "expensive" elite one, the elite steal almost always wins, as long as the malus lands somewhere you can afford it.
