How to play The GOAT

The GOAT is a free basketball career game that runs right in your browser — no sign-up, no install, in English and Portuguese. You build a player by stealing attributes from the NBA's greatest legends, live an entire career season by season, and get a final verdict ranging from "Playground Baller" to THE GOAT.

1. The attribute draft

Everything starts with the attribute draft. Each round the game draws a legend and you steal one attribute from them — the shot of one of history's greatest scorers, the court vision of a genius point guard, the frame of a dominant big man. Every steal has a price: you also inherit a malus, a penalty derived from that legend's biggest weakness. Stealing from a slow giant can cost you speed; stealing from a frail shooter can cost you strength. Once per draft you can reroll if the legend on the clock doesn't fit your build.

The trick is putting together a coherent build: a pure scorer, a cerebral playmaker, a relentless defender — or a balanced do-it-all. The weaknesses you accept in the draft follow you your whole career.

2. The three game modes

3. The season, game by game

After the draft comes the real NBA draft: teams make offers with different plans — contend for a title right away, rebuild patiently, or shine in a big market. Your choice sets the context for the season.

The calendar has 82 games and is alive: the whole league — the other 29 teams — is simulated alongside you, with standings, an awards race, and trades. Some games in the season are key games: rivalry classics, direct position battles, special games. In those, you step onto the court: the play-by-play runs on the clock and the game pauses at 2 to 5 decision moments, where you choose between the safe play, the bold play, or the reckless play. On the final possession, an 8-second timer tightens the choice (you can turn it off on the start screen).

Successful bold plays can turn into iconic moments — the game-winning basket, the dunk that silenced the arena — and iconic moments earn legacy points in the final verdict.

4. Playoffs, awards and longevity

Once you reach the playoffs, series are decided in pivotal games and the finals are a full game-by-game series. Over your career you rack up rings, MVPs, season awards, and records — and you age: your peak arrives around 26-29 years old, and after that your body starts to charge interest. Knowing when to hang it up is also part of your legacy.

5. The verdict

At the end, the game weighs everything — points, rings, MVPs, iconic moments, longevity — and stamps your tier: from Playground Baller through Role Player, Starter, All-Star, Superstar and Legend, up to the top. THE GOAT demands a career on the level of Jordan (5+ rings and 4+ MVPs) or LeBron (38,000+ points and 4+ rings), plus an elite legacy score. Very few careers get there.

Quick tips

Frequently asked questions

Is the game really free? Do I need an account?

Yes, and no account needed. The GOAT is 100% free, runs right in your browser and never asks for an e-mail, password or download. Open it, play.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes — the game was designed mobile-first. It works in any modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox), on your phone, tablet or computer.

How long does a career take?

A full career in Career mode takes around 20 to 40 minutes, depending on how many games you play out. In Quick Mode the season runs itself and you can finish an entire career in a few minutes — great for testing different builds.

Where is my save? Do I lose progress if I close the tab?

Progress is saved automatically in your browser's local storage, on your device — close the tab and come back later, the career picks up where you left off. Heads up: clearing your browser data deletes the save, and the game keeps one career at a time ("New career" replaces the current one).

Why did I lose a game even though I nailed every decision?

Because basketball is a team sport. Your decisions move part of the scoreboard — the rest comes from your roster's strength and the opponent's night. The result screen shows that split ("your impact" vs. "rest of the team"). Nailing every call raises your odds a lot, but it doesn't guarantee a win — just like real life.

What does it take to become THE GOAT?

The top tier demands a historic career on two fronts: an elite legacy score AND a résumé worthy of Jordan (5+ rings and 4+ MVPs) or LeBron (38k+ points and 4+ rings). Very few careers hit those numbers — if it were easy, it wouldn't be the GOAT.

Are the players and teams real?

The legends in the draft are referenced by name, as historical references — no photos or real imagery. The league's teams are inspired by the franchises, with the game's own visual identity.

Is there a Portuguese version?

Yes. The whole game exists in English and Portuguese — the language toggle is on the home screen and works at any moment, even mid-career.
